MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Tampa on Friday evening, falling 3-0. Game scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-15.
In set one, the Bucs (10-6, 2-5 SSC) gave up the first five service points to the Spartans (16-2, 7-1 SSC) before battling back to tie it at 10-10. Tampa put another run together, taking seven of the next nine points to go up 17-12. Once again, the Bucs put fought back, tying the game at 19-19 late in the game. Three Buccaneer errors and a few Melissa Vanderhall kills gave the Spartans the game, 25-21.
In set two, the Bucs and Spartans were tied early at 5-5 before Tampa went on a 14-8 run to take a 19-13 lead. The Bucs racked off three straight points off of a kill by Lovisa Johansson, Julia Teixiera and a Tampa error to get within three at 19-16. The Spartans rallied to take the game, taking six of the final eight service points to win 25-18.
Set three saw the Spartans push out to a lead of 11-3. Barry fought back to 15-10, earning points off of kills by Julia Ridley, Johansson, and Ady Alcantara, who had a service ace in the run as well. After a time out, however, Tampa went on a 10-5 run to end the game at 25-15.
For the Buccaneers, Ridley led the offense with nine kills, while Teixiera added eight. Libby Walter had 18 assists, while Spenser Rigg added 16 digs on defense.
The Bucs return to action tomorrow night at home against Eckerd at 4:00 pm.
