Women's Tennis Takes Second Loss of the season to NAIA's #1

MELBOURNE, Ala.—The women’s tennis team loses only their second match of the year against top NAIA ranked Auburn University Montgomery 7-2 on Thursday.

The wins for Barry (10-2) came for Caroline Wendling at the number three position and Darya Yablonskaya at the number six spot. Wendling downed AMU’s #6 ranked player Morgane Zowczak in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 10-4. Yablonskaya defeated Hannah Appleyard 6-1, 6-1 to remain undefeated on the season in singles play.

#10 Angie Werschel played a the top of the Buccaneer lineup and dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Ana Veselinovic. Behind Werschel was senior Yulia Kashelkina with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) loss to Parja Maloo. At the number four position, freshman Mia Fiocca took a 6-4, 6-0 loss at the hands of #24 Whiney Byrd, and Julie Stas rounds things out in singles play, falling 6-1, 6-3 to #11 Nathalie Sienkob.

Auburn-Montgomery swept doubles, starting with an 8-5 win over Barbi Pocza and Kashelkina to the team of Veselinovic/Appleyard. The #8 doubles pair for AUM took down Barry’s second team of Fiocca/Werschel 8-6. At number three doubles, Berit Peterson and Yablonskaya suffered a loss to the Maloo/Byrd team 8-2.

The next action for the #5 Buccaneers is Saturday, March 20 against conference foe Rollins at home in the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
