MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped their Sunshine State Conference opener to the defending women’s basketball champs, the Tampa Spartans, 71-57 in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday.
Leading 39-37 with 15:39 left in the second half after Barry’s Glaucia Lehn converted on a fastbreak, the Spartans (4-2, 1-0 SSC) reeled off 10 straight points to take a 49-37 lead on a pair of free throws by Taja Green at 11:16.
The Bucs (3-3, 0-1 SSC) were unable to get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Yvonne Houston scored a career-high for the second straight game, connecting for 24 points for the Bucs to lead all scorers in the game. Shanna Suttington had nine points and a game-high eight assists. Gianna Messina led the Spartans with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Green added 20 points and nine boards and Lindesy Watson had 16 points.
The Bucs host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 2:00 pm in a key region matchup.
