Women's Tennis Earns FIrst Conference Win

TAMPA, Fla.—The fourth-ranked Barry University women’s tennis team earned their first conference win on Saturday morning by sweeping the #41 Tampa Spartans (0-3, 0-2 SSC) 9-0 on the road.
 
The Bucs (3-0, 1-0 SSC) started the morning in doubles action where Olivia Matuszak and Julie Stas beat Lauren Hewett and Leslie Raymond 8-5 at the top flight. At number two doubles, Laura Boguet paired up with Caroline Wendling to defeat Maddie Caropino and Amber Fahrner 8-3. In the final doubles flight Angie Werschel and Akemi Maehama beat Megan Mancini and Briana Ryan 8-2.
 
Like doubles play, the Bucs took all of the singles matches. Starting in the number one spot, Matuszak earned her first win at #1 by beating Hewett 6-2, 7-5. At number two singles, Alex Gwizdoski handed Raymond a 6-1, 6-0 loss. At #3 singles, Stas blanked Kathleen Beckham 6-0, 6-0.
 
The Bucs had no troubles in the lower flights as Maehama beat Mancini 6-0, 6-3 at number four. Mona Mansour defeated Briana Ryan 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles, and Boguet kept the Bucs perfect on the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Caropino in the finals single flight.
 
The Bucs return to action tomorrow for the final match of a three-day road trip when they visit Florida Southern for a 10:00 am matchup.
