MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry softball team opened the 2011 season with a doubleheader loss to the Flagler College Saints dropping the first game 10-1 in nine innings and the second 5-1 at Buccaneer Field on Sunday.

The Bucs (0-2) had a chance to grab a lead in the first game. Amber Durkin led off the third inning with a single and Sarah Broeseker followed with a double to the gap in left-center. But Durkin was cut down at home on a perfect relay by shortstop Lauren Bessent.

Neither team threatened until extra frames and the tie-breaker. In the ninth, the Saints (10-0) grabbed a lead on an RBI single from Tori Jolley to score the tie-break runner and Breezy Collings closed out the scoring with a grand slam over the center field fence.

Natalia Ojeda got the Bucs on the board in the bottom of the inning with a single to score Broeseker.

Kelly Riddick (5-0) earned the win for the Saints. She worked eight scoreless innings and struck out seven. Brianna Smith (0-1) took the loss for the Bucs. She went 8.1 innings and struck out eight, but allowed five earned runs to cross the plate after the tie-breaker.

In the second game, the Saints scored three runs in the second inning, capped by a two-run single from Bissent. Stacy Piagno added a pinch-hit two-run homer in the sixth.

After Hannah Shy singled with one out in the seventh, Durkin ripped a triple to left-center to plate the first run of the year against FC’s Kalyn Loverich (5-0) who had started the year with a 27.1 inning scoreless streak. Loverich finished with a complete-game six-hitter and seven strikeouts.

Paula Mackin (0-1) took the loss for the Bucs, going the distance and allowing five runs (two earned). She gave up five hits, five walks and struck out five.

The Bucs travel to the UAH Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala., Friday, Feb. 18 to Sunday Feb. 20.
