MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a non-conference doubleheader with the Northwood (Fla.) Seahawks on Tuesday at Buccaneer Field, dropping the first game 5-3, but bouncing back to take the nightcap 4-2.

The Bucs (30-12) got all the runs they would need in the second game in the second inning, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four runs on only two hits. Amber Durkin had a lead-off single and scored on an error. Emma Dunlap, Sarah Broeseker, and Grace Collins drove in runs with ground balls as the Seahawks (14-20) were unable to convert outs on two of them.

Paula Mackin (10-3) worked the final four innings to get the win for the Bucs. She gave up a run on three hits and a two walks and struck out two. Melissa Richards (1-1) started and took the loss, allowing all four runs on four hits and a walk.

In the opener, the Bucs out-hit the Seahawks 9-8, including Jessica Tabor’s sixth homer of the season, but three errors led to four unearned runs and the loss.

In the first inning, the Seahawks scored twice as starter Brianna Smith (15-8) failed to handle a pair of bunt attempts, leading to two runs. Kayla Saastamoinen and Brittany Merrit teamed up in the third for a run on a pair of singles and a stolen base.

In the fourth inning, a Cassy Zamora error led to a two-run single by Kayla Duncan.

For the Bucs, Natalia Ojeda and Durkin had RBI singles to go along with Tabor’s homer.

Smith took the loss, giving up five runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. Jessica Bevlin, who pitched in both games, totaled six scoreless innings, but did not figure in either decision.

Michelle Crompton (12-17) earned the win in the complete game for Northwood. She allowed nine hits and two walks and struck out one.

The Bucs close the regular season this weekend at Lynn’s McCucker Sports Complex with a Sunshine State Conference series. Saturday’s single game starts at 2:00 pm and the doubleheader on Sunday is slated for 1:00 pm.
