MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry Buccaneers got a spectacular performance from their senior forward Mark Anderson as they defeated North Georgia 4-1 in men’s soccer action from Buccaneer Field Sunday afternoon.
In a game that was shortened by severe weather just past the 70th minute mark; that was about the only way the Bucs’ offense would be stopped. Barry set the tone and pace of the game from the beginning of the match and created numerous scoring opportunities early on but were unable to capitalize until late in the first half when Anderson connected for his second goal of the season.
Anderson added another goal just before the half to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission but the senior wasn’t finished yet. A frustrated Saints squad trying to contain Anderson and the Buccaneer offense committed a foul on Anderson inside the box and he would quickly capitalize by punching in the penalty kick to complete the hat-trick.
The Saints got a goal back when Manuel Hernandez was able to intercept an errant pass and sneak a goal past keeper Johnny Rodrigues. However, on the ensuing possession, junior defender Joe Conkleton served a ball up to a streaking Anderson who capped off the day with his fourth goal of the contest.
Minutes later play came to a halt as a severe thunderstorm rolled into the area and the game was officially called at 70:05 with a final score 4-1.
This was the second time in his career at Barry that Anderson scored four goals in one contest, the other coming in a 6-1 Buccaneer win against Lander on Sept. 4, 2009 as a sophomore.
After opening up with two wins at home, the Buccaneers will head up to Greenville, Tenn., to play a pair of games against Tusculum University on Friday, Sept. 9 followed by Carson-Newman College on Sept. 11.
Livestats and audio broadcast coverage will be provided through the Barry University athletic website,, beginning at 6:45 pm Friday evening.
