MIAMI--The Barry women's basketball team fell to NCAA Division I FIU by a 72-64 score on Saturday night at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
Jen Mitchell led the Bucs with 15 points, while Danielle DeBerry registered a squad-best six rebounds to go along with 10 points and Shanna Suttington tallied a team-high eight assists. Jerica Coley led all scorers for FIU with 24 points, while Finda Masare added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Carmen Miloglav had 11 points.
The Bucs jumped out of the gate quickly and led 7-3 after a jumper by Mitchell at 17:31. The rest of the half was very close, with two ties and five lead changes. But with the Panthers leading 29-28 with 4:09 to play, they rolled into the locker room on a 9-1 run to take a 38-29 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Bucs cut the lead to one on several occasions and took a 57-54 lead with 8:27 to play on a four-point play by Jackie Perez. FIU stormed back with a 12-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 66-6 lead with 2:22 on a layup by Fanni Hutlassa. The Bucs were unable to get closer than four points the rest of the way.
The Bucs close out the pre-season with a contest on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Bank United Center at the seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes, before starting the regular season at the NSU Tip-off Classic Nov. 11-12.
