LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University's No. 2-ranked men's golf team has an eight-stroke lead after two rounds of the Matlock Classic hosted by Florida Southern.
The Buccaneers shot 278-281 -- 559 in the opening two rounds Monday on the 7,090-yard Lone Palm Golf Club. Florida Southern is second at 567, and Lynn third at 3-under 573.
A trio of Buccaneers are tied for fourth individually, and all five of them are in the top 15. Marcelo Huarte shot 71-69 -- 140. Marcus Segerstrom shot 69-71 -- 140. Scott Smyers, a Lakeland native, shot 67-73 -- 140. All three are tied for fourth at 4-under.
Florida Southern's Tim Crouch shot 64-68 -- 132, and at 12-under, holds a three-stroke lead over teammate Case Gard, who shot 69-66 -- 135. Florida Tech's Ray Badenhorst shot 72-67 -- 139, and is third.
Barry's Jaime Rodriguez is tied for 10th in a pack of five after shooting 1-under 71-72 -- 143. Buccaneers freshman Adam Svensson shot 75-69 -- 144, and is tied for 15th at even-par with two other golfers.
Segerstrom had an eagle and nine birdies. Smyers birdied 10 holes. Rodriguez had nine birdies. Segerstrom is tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring at 6-under.
Third round coverage begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
