Women's Tennis Takes Down Division I North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team kept its perfect season in tact with a 4-3 win over NCAA Division I North Florida Sunday.

The Buccaneers (4-0) won two of the three doubles match to take the pairs point. Freshmen Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila kept rolling at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 win over Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre. Barry's Kimmy Twelker and Linda Fritschken defeated Rebecca Pereira and Taylor Hollander, 8-6, at No. 2.

North Florida's Simona Weymar and Mariella Calderon defeated Akemi Maehama and Karina Goia, 8-4, at the No. 3 flight.

"It was a good win for the girls today," Bucs assistant coach Maria Lopez said. "They have been working hard, and today they had a chance to prove themselves on the court on a tough day. It was tough conditions -- windy and really cold. They really competed well in each match. I am excited to watch them get better with each match we play."

Aviles defeated Abanda, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Fritschken, ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, beat Weymar, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, at No. 2. Onila defeated Marina Cunningham, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3. Aguirre handed Maehama her first dual match loss in her three-year Bucs career, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4. Goia breezed by Pereira, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. Hollander won by default over Twelker, who retired with an injury, at No. 6 singles.

The Buccaneers host Eckerd at 10 a.m. Saturday at Buccaneer Tennis Center. The Bucs will host Saint Leo at 9 a.m. Sunday.
