MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – Barry University's No. 2-ranked women’s golf team is within one stroke of the lead, following two rounds of the Lady Bucs Invitational.
The Buccaneers, hosting the tournament for the first time in the program’s history, recovered nicely in the windy second round at the par-72, 6,045-yard Don Shula’s Golf Club. Ranked No. 2 in the nation, Barry shot 305-292 – 597 on the first day of the 54-hole event. The 13 strokes the Bucs trimmed off their opening-round total in the second round pulled them within striking distance of clubhouse leader Nova Southeastern’s 294-302 -- 596.
Barry’s 292 in the second round was the low for the 10-team, 65-player tournament field Monday. It is also the Bucs’ lowest round in school history. The previous school record was 294 in the second round of last year’s South Regional.
Two Buccaneers are tied for seventh at 149, five strokes behind leader Emily Rymer of Florida Southern, who shot even-par 70-74 – 144. Barry junior Francesca Perini and sophomore Maria Paola Fiorio each shot 76-73 to fall into the tie for seventh with Nova’s Daniela Ortiz. Sophomore Nicky Ferre and freshman Martina Bertuccioli are tied for 13th at 152. Ferre shot 78-74, and Bertuccioli 80-72. Junior Nancy Vergara is tied for 16th after shooting 75-78 -- 153.
Nova’s Rachel Lewis is second after shooting 72-75 – 147. St. Edward’s Haley Haught and Ryanne Haddow are tied with Rollins’ Kayla Sciupider and Hally Leadbetter for third at 4-over 138.
Bertuccioli’s even par in the second round is a season-low, five strokes better than her previous best. She had two birdies in the second round.
Competing as an individual in her first college tournament, freshman Carolina Heredia shot 78-79 – 157 to find herself in a tie for 29th. She had a birdie in each of Monday’s rounds. Junior Daniela Murray, also playing as an individual, is tied for 35th after shooting 80-78 -- 158. Murray sank one birdie putt. Freshman Paloma Vega shot 86-94 – 180.
Vergara's six birdies trailed Rymer's tournament-leading seven. Ferre and Fiorio each had five. Bertuccioli’s 26 pars is three behind tournament leader Lauren Shuford of Saint Leo, who had 29 in the 36 holes.
The tournament concludes with Tuesday’s final round.
