Graduate Updates

Wendy Saintval (MARC’03) recently completed the 2nd Qualifying Exam of the five requirements for the PhD in Mathematics at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, MA. He is currently conducting research in ocean acoustics.

Erica Ramos (MARC’03) was accepted into Bryn Mawr College, University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and Fordham University, she is pursuing her PhD in Psychology at Fordham University, NY, Fall 2004.

Randolph Roberts (MBRS) currently pursuing his PhD in Biomedical Sciences at Vanderbilt University, TN recently published “Identification of Store-independent and Store-operated Ca Conductances in Caenorhabditis elegans Intestinal Epithelial Cells”, Journal of General Physiology 122:207-223, 2004.

Laura Ferrer-Wreder, PhD (MARC’93), an assistant professor of psychology at Pennsylvania State- Capital College, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Sara Anne, on February 10, 2004, and was a Visiting Scientist during our RISE Summer Workshop. She recently published a book “Successful Prevention and Youth Development Programs”, 2004.

Zameer Upadhya (MARC’99) was elected president of the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance & Accounting (ALPFA) Miami Chapter.

Lenore Polo-Rodicio also gave birth to a baby girl on June 24, 2004. Isabelle Rodicio came in at 21 inches, 8 pounds 8 ounces.

Davecia Ragoonath (MIRT/MARC’02) had her research poster accepted to be presented at the 10th Annual International Coral Reef Symposium at Okinawa, Japan, June-July, 2004.

Leisis Martino (MARC’01) completed the requirements for her Master’s in Computer Science from Florida International University, FL, May 2004. Leisis is currently pursuing her PhD in Computer Science.

Parinda Parikh, MD (MBRS’94), was married to Dr. Saurabh Kaushik on November 29, 2003. She recently completed her fellowship on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and has accepted a faculty position as Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at New York Presbyterian Hospital and at Weill Cornell Medical College, July 2004.

Isabelle Simeus-Felix and her husband Jospeh are also proud new parents to a beautiful baby girl, Gabrielle Elizabeth Felix.

Raquel Peralta (MIRT/RISE’03) completed the requirements for her MS in Health Sciences degree at John’s Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Ria Achong (MIRT/MARC’01) completed the requirements for her Masters in Microbiology degree at University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD.

Efrain Garcia (MARC’00), currently pursuing a PhD in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University, TN, was recently awarded the NIGMS MARC predoctoral fellowship. He also had a recent publication, “Dynamic changes in prefrontal cortex gene expression following lysergic acid diethylamide administration.” Brain Res. Mol. Brain Res 111 (1-2): 182-8, 2003.

Robinson Gaviria (MIRT’99) has accepted an internship with the CDC- National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Morgantown, WV. He was the recipient of the Florida Environmental Health Association scholarship. Robinson expects to complete the requirements for his MS in Public Health from Florida International University, FL, December 2004.

Eauly Brautigam (MARC’02) has been accepted into the Clinical Psychology Program at Nova Southeastern University.
