Barry Family CARE Center awarded $59,472 from Miami Beach

The City of Miami Beach recently awarded Barry University’s Family CARE Center $59,472 in funding for the Parent-Child Home Program for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Barry’s Family CARE Center (Counseling, Assessment, Research, and Education) is designed to meet the academic and mental health needs of underserved children and their families by offering a full range of educational diagnostics, interventions, and mental health support services.

The Family CARE Center works with the city of Miami Beach by arranging for trained counseling graduate students to serve as “home visitors” to provide home visits to families within the city of Miami Beach. The Barry Students receive tuition remission for their work within the Parent Child Home Program.

The ADSOE graduate students help parents realize their role as their children’s first and most important teacher, generating enthusiasm for learning and verbal interaction through the use of literacy instruments. Home visitors empower parents, allowing them, to prepare their children for school success, and take pride in their commitment to, and impact on, their child’s education.

The Parent-Child Home Program is an evidenced-based early childhood development grant program engages children ages 14 months to 4 years and their parents to role-model effective communication strategies and literacy skills training to improve relationships between parent and child.

This grant allows the Family CARE Center to continue working within the community. For 2012-2013, Parent-Child Home Program supported ADSOE students with tuition remission for a total of $32,724.00.
