Getting Ready! Congratulations on becoming a Barry Buccaneer! All undergraduate freshmen and transfer students must complete the New Student Checklist prior to attending New Student Orientation.

1. Academic Advising and Registration: 

The most important task after submitting your enrollment deposit is to schedule an appointment with your Academic Advisor. Your Advisor will help you create your educational plan and select your first semester class schedule. Visit myBarry to make an appointment with your assigned Advisor. 

  • Some students may be required to take a placement or challenge test prior to registering for classes. For more information, to access study guides, or to schedule your test appointment, visit the Placement Testing website.

  • Ask your advisor to add the one-credit First Year Experience Seminar (ORI 100) to your class schedule during your first semester. ORI 100 helps new students transition to college both academically and socially. Students who take the First Year Experience seminar are more successful and have higher GPAs.

  • If you have a documented disability, IEP, or 504 plan, we invite you to contact the Office of Accessibility Services at accessibilityservices@barry.edu or by phone at 305-899-3489 with any questions. Students can submit an Accommodations Request form or learn more on the Accessibility Services webpage.

2. All New Students are Required to Complete Each of the Following:

    • Complete your FAFSA early to get the most access to financial aid.
    • Complete any pending financial aid requirements in your Self-Service Portal
    • Add your banking information to receive direct deposits for any refunds
    • Schedule a virtual meeting with a Financial Aid counselor if you have any questions.
    • Barry University offers various forms of payment online, in-person, by phone, and by mail. Consider signing up for a Payment Plan to pay your tuition and fees in installments.
    • All students living in University provided housing and international commuter students attending classes on an F1 or J1 visa, must submit health records online prior to New Student Orientation. Required immunizations for students in University housing include 2 MMR vaccines, 3 Hepatitis B vaccines, 1 MCV4 at age 16 or older, and a current TDAP vaccine. Commuting International students must provide proof of 2 MMR vaccines. Barry University also highly recommends the COVID-19, and annual Flu vaccines  for all students, faculty, staff. Visit https://barry.studenthealthportal.com and follow the instructions for entering your immunizations. If you are unable to access the health portal, you may email your vaccine records to healthservices@barry.edu.     • Your Barry University student ID is used to access various campus resources and services as well as check in to campus events. It is important that all students keep their student ID with them at all times while on campus. Request your student ID and pick it up in person at New Student Orientation check-in.
    • Check your personal email for directions on how to activate. Your student email is our official way to communicate with students so it’s important to get in the habit of checking it now

3. Students Must Complete These If Any of the Categories Below are Applicable:

  • The on-campus residential community offers an environment that can contribute not only to academic achievement, but to social, recreational, and spiritual development as well.  For best selection, submit the housing application early when room preferences and roommate selection options are most available.

  • Students residing in university housing, enrolled in Undergraduate Nursing, Podiatry, Anesthesia, Physician Assistant, Graduate OT, LAW, Graduate Social Work, and International students attending Barry on and F1 or J1 visa, will be automatically billed for the student insurance plan at registration. Domestic commuting students, not enrolled in the above programs may purchase the students directly from Academic Health plans https://myahpcare.com/barry. Students who would like to use their own health insurance have the option to waive the university health coverage fee. The waiver becomes available only after you are registered for your first semester classes and requires you to upload a copy of your insurance card.   • All commuters and resident students that plan to park a car on campus must apply for a free parking permit. The permit decal must be properly displayed on the registered vehicles at all times. Student can park in designated spaces only.

  • Complete the FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) form. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Barry University is permitted to disclose information from your education records to your parents if your parents (or one of your parents) claim you as a dependent for federal tax purposes. The term “parent” includes natural parent, guardian, or individual acting as a parent in the absence of a natural parent or guardian.

  • Barry University is proud to assist all military affiliated students who wish to utilize their education benefits. Our Veteran Affairs’ School Certifying Officials serve as liaisons between the student and Veterans Administration. 

  • Have you been issued your BarryU I-20? Have you been issued a student visa (F-1 Visas for degree seeking student, J-1 Visa for exchange visitors)? You must check in with International Student Services to be able to register for classes.

  • If you haven’t submitted your final application documents or transcripts, you can do so by emailing myapplicationdocs@barry.edu. You can also drop off hard copies in-person to Enrollment Services in Kelley House on the Miami Shores campus.

4. RSVP for New Student Orientation on the myBarry dashboard. 

At Orientation, all resident and commuter students will be officially welcomed to the campus community by the New Student Programs team, as well as faculty, staff, and student leaders. New students will experience interactive academic and social activities designed to facilitate the transition to college life.
