Sensory Garden Guide

Encourage your child’s development through play in a garden that is specifically tailored to your child’s senses.

This Sensory Garden Guide was collaboratively researched and designed by four Barry University occupational therapy students. The guide was designed to assist parents, teachers, and therapists. Helpful terminology, on-line links, and activity descriptions are provided as references for creating an individualized sensory garden within a natural environment. This web site focuses on the needs of children with sensory processing disorders and illustrates a therapeutic approach for facilitating appropriate integration of the senses. The key objectives of this site are to provide basic information regarding sensory processing disorders, and sensory gardens, while also incorporating various activities within a natural environment in order to maximize the child’s learning and enjoyment.

Note to Caregiver:

Please note that this web site is not intended to be a diagnostic tool. Please seek a pediatrician or licensed occupational therapist to discuss how the following tips and techniques might apply to your child. Remember that with all of the activities adult supervision is strongly urged. We encourage you to adapt all activities and tips so they do not exceed the child’s physical or developmental capacity.
