MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Barry University sophomore Adam Svensson (Surrey Vancouver, B.C.) shot a course-record 10-under 61 at Normandy Shores Golf Club in Monday’s second round of the Buccaneer Invitational presented by Carrabba’s Italian Grill.
Svensson, last year’s Phil Mickelson award winner, given to the top freshman in NCAA Division II, finished the second round with a birdie, par, birdie, eagle, par and eagle to cap of his school record-breaking low round. He shot 64 earlier this spring to set the school record for lowest round.
Svensson is the clubhouse leader at 12-under 69-61 -- 130. He holds an eight-stroke lead over Saint Leo’s Joey Savoie and Chico State’s Alistair Docherty. Svensson packaged 10 birdies with his two second-round eagles to shoot a tournament-best 7-under on par-5 scoring holes. He also leads the 14-team, 82-player field in par-4 holes at 4-under. He was 1-under on par 3s. Svensson had nine 3s in his record-breaking round.
“He has a lot of talent,” Barry coach Jimmy Stobs said. “The golf course today lent itself to a low score, and he was able to do it. You still have to hit the shots and make the putts, and he was able to do it. He likes this golf course a lot.”
Svensson's 61 is lower than some of golf's biggest names, including Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead and Peter Thomson, who've played the Normandy Shores course.
The No. 1-ranked Buccaneers shot a school-record 270 in the second round to take a 15-stroke lead over Saint Leo entering Tuesday’s final round. The Bucs’ 270 matched the tournament record set last year by Nova Southeastern. Johnson & Wales (Fla.) is third at 3-over 571. Nova is fourth at 4-over 572.
The Buccaneers were the only team under par after the first day.
Barry sophomore Nico Cavero, playing as an individual, is tied for fourth with Wilmington’s Andrew Baldo and Nova Southeastern’s Santiago Gomez at 3-under 139. Cavero shot the low round of the opening round when he used three birdies and an eagle in a bogey-free round to fire a career-best 66.
Bucs senior Scott Smyers and junior John Yu, also playing as an individual, are tied for seventh at 2-under 140. Smyers shot 1-over in the first round before recording a 3-under 68 in the second. His 68 is a season low. Yu made three birdies in the opening round to shoot par, and sank four more in the second for a career-low 2-under 69.
Barry junior Berry Jole shot 68 in the second round to put himself in a tie for ninth at 1-under 141. His 12 birdies in the opening two rounds lead the field. Buccaneers senior Jared Dalga and freshman Patrick Murray, playing as an individual, are tied for 27th at 2-over 144. Dalga shot 71-73, and was 1-under on par-3 holes. Murray put together back-to-back 72s, establishing a personal season-low. He leads the field with 29 pars.
Bucs freshman Mario Beltran is tied for 36th at 147 after shooting par in the opening round and 76 in the second. Playing as individuals, Barry senior Marcelo Huarte is 52nd at 151, following a 74-77 first day, and freshman Eirik Groenhaug is tied for 70th at 157. He shot 76 in the opening round.
“Overall, I was pleased with the team’s play,” Stobs said. “We got off to a slow start this morning, but the guys battled back. They started making things happen this afternoon, and now we’ve put ourselves in a position to win it.”
Tuesday's final round tee times begin at 7:35 a.m. The leaders are set to go off at 12:05 p.m.
