MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University women’s soccer team (3-2-0) defeated the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions 3-2 in overtime in the final round of the Nike Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions (2-2-0) struck first as Meagan Lasley lifted a cross from the left wing to Melissa DoRemus in the 22nd minute.
Four minutes later, the Bucs tied the game 1-1 on a 35-yard free kick from Michelle Tarasiuk.
Right before the half, the Lions’ Tamara Geels was whistled for her second yellow card and sent off, giving the Bucs a player advantage.
In the second half, the Bucs used the advantage to pressure the Lions, out-shooting them 12-3. But Commerce caught a break in the 54th minute when new keeper Kelly Tryson came out late on a challenge and Lashley touched it by her and scored into the empty net.
With the Lions becoming more aggressive to compensate for the disadvantage, the foul count against them began to mount. The Bucs got the equalizer in the 79th minute. Elanna Brady lifted a corner kick into the box and Carley Radcliff headed home the goal.
Lacy Alexnader and Chelsey Haight also received second yellow cards and were sent off by the end of regulation, giving the Bucs an 11-8 advantage.
In the overtime period, Brady won another corner and though Lion keeper Jennifer Alvarado punched out the service, Tarasiuk gathered it in and, unmarked in the penalty box, ripped a shot to the far post for the game winner at 94:05.
Alvarado had eight saves for the Lions (2-2-0) as the Bucs held an 18-12 advantage in shots. Sami Cromartie had five saves in the first half for the Bucs, while Tryson had one in the second period and overtime to earn her first win.
The Bucs travel to Winter Park, Fla., on Saturday, Sept. 15 to face the Rollins Tars in the Sunshine State Conference opener.
