WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Battling consistent rain showers all night, Elanna Brady finally scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to lift the Barry University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (3-4) on Wednesday night to end a three-game losing skid.
Barry (4-5) opened the first half on the offensive recording three shots within the first 15 minutes of play to the Sailfish’s one. But a loose ball skidded through the Buccaneer defense and PBA defender Caitlin Ross, who sneaked through the center midfield, banged two consecutive shots off the post missing a prime scoring opportunity. After breathing a sigh of relief, the Buccaneers settled in and were scoreless at the break.
The intensity picked up for both teams in the second half. However, it was Barry that managed to break the scoreless game in the 76th minute. At the 75:25 mark, the Bucs’ Damarys Mendez ripped a shot from 20-yards out on the left side of the field. The ball ricocheted off the hands PBA keeper Ashley Morrell and fell just inside the six-yard box. Trailing down the right side, Brady moved in and netted the game-winner while Morrell was still recovering from the diving save she made on Mendez’s shot.
The Buccaneers finished with 10 shots to the Sailfish’s eight. Barry goalie Kelly Tryson recorded two saves and the win to improve to 2-2 on the season. Ashley Morrell recorded four saves for PBA, but suffered the loss falling to 3-4.
Barry will return to the friendly confines of Buccaneer Field on Saturday, Sept. 29 hosting Eckerd at 7 pm in a Sunshine State Conference match-up.
