DECATUR, Ala. – The Barry University softball team (13-2) concluded play at the Charger Chillout on Sunday afternoon with another pair of wins and was named tournament champion for the second straight week. The Buccaneers defeated Southern Arkansas (3-4) in five innings 9-0 and picked up a 13-0 five-inning win against West Georgia (6-6) to close out tournament play.

Ashley Likens went 5-for-6 at the place with two home runs, five RBI and scored four runs to pace the Buccaneers offensively. Shyla Rider drew three walks, but went 2-for-4 with six RBI, a triple and a home run, while Jessica Bevlin and Amber Jack picked up wins in the circle.

Against Southern Arkansas, the Buccaneers scored three runs in the second and erupted for six in the third in route to a 9-0 win over the Riderettes. Rider had a base-clearing three RBI triple that led the Bucs’ three-run third and Likens went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Buccaneers.

Jessica Bevlin (2-0) tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out two without allowing a run to pick up the win for Barry. Alex Doyle (1-2) gave up nine runs and walked three in the loss for Southern Arkansas.

In the Bucs’ tournament finale, they walloped the West Georgia Wolves in five innings 13-0. Jack (8-0) remained undefeated on the season after hurling a one-hit shutout and struck out five. Kacie Crider (3-2) gave up five runs in two innings on five hits.

Amada Goelz and Natalie Heeley recorded RBI hits in the first inning to give Barry an early 2-0 lead. In the third, Likens and Megan Young belted back-to-back homers that extended Barry’s lead to 5-0. The Bucs added three more runs in the fourth which was ignited by Rider’s two-run homer. In the fifth, the Buccaneers scored five more runs that Likens capped off with her second two-run home run of the game for the win.

Every starter in the Buccaneer lineup picked up at least one hit against West Georgia led by Likens’ 3-for-3, four RBI, and two home run performance. Goelz and Cristina DeTagle added two hits, while Danielle Rezendes and Rider finished with two-RBI. Young added a solo home run.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 29-Mar. 1 for a three-game Sunshine State Conference series against Rollins in Winter Park, Fla. that will be the first series of a 10-day road trip for the team. Friday’s game will begin at 7 pm followed by a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
