WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (16-2, 3-0 SSC) completed a Sunshine State Conference sweep of the Rollins Tars (3-8, 0-3 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at Lake Island Park. The Buccaneers won the first game 4-2 in 11 innings and closed out the series with a 6-0 shutout.

Shyla Rider went 4-for-7 to lead Barry at the plate, while Young and Likens added another four hits apiece. Young, Holli Davis and Amanda Goelz each drove in a pair of runs, while Amber Jack tossed 12 consecutive scoreless innings to pick up both wins in the circle and improve to 10-0 on the season.

After struggling at the plate in the first two games of the series, the Buccaneers erupted for 14 hits in the series finale en route to a 6-0 shutout to complete the sweep. Barry scored single runs in the first and third innings for an early 2-0 lead. Shyla Rider led both innings off with singles and Goelz drove in both runs to account for the scores.

Young hit a two-run homer in the fifth to extend Barry’s lead to four and Davis and Ali Perantoni recorded back-to-back RBI hits that ensured the win in the top of the seventh. Coming off five innings of relief in the first game, Jack (10-0) tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out one to remain undefeated in the circle. Rollins’ Ingrid Schumacher (0-1) gave up seven hits and two runs in the loss. Young went 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored once to lead the Bucs offensively.

In the first game, the Buccaneers outlasted the Tars in an 11-inning marathon, 4-2. Barry pitchers Young and Jack combined to allow nine hits and five strikeouts. After playing the first six innings at first base, Jack (9-0) traded with Young, who started the game in the circle, and tossed the final five innings of three-hit shutout ball to earn the win.

Rollins took an advantage of a Buccaneer fielding error to take a 1-0 lead in the third. Sherri Rabenold reached on a one-out single and later scored on the errand throw. However, Barry managed to claim a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Brittany Anderson reached on a one-out single and then stole two consecutive bases to reach third before being doubled in by Rider. After a Cristina DeTagle single, Likens hit an RBI single to give the Bucs the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tars managed to tie the score 2-2 on Rabenold’s RBI single. After three scoreless extra innings, Barry finally plated two runs in the top of the 11th for the win. Young led the inning off with a single and then Jack drove in the game-winner with an RBI single to center. Davis drove in an insurance run to make the lead 4-2 on a squeeze play that resulted in an RBI single.

Rider, DeTagle, Likens and Anderson each had two hits apiece to lead Barry at the plate. Rabenold, Christine Roser and Lauren Starcher had two hits each for Rollins. Nicole Anderson (2-3) went the distance from the rubber and allowed four runs on 11 hits and struck out eight in the loss for Rollins.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Monday, Mar. 3 in a doubleheader against the Albany State Golden Rams starting at 1 pm.
