MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Evan Ashley drove in three runs and Andrew Koubek pitched into the eighth inning as the Barry Buccaneers defeated the Flagler Saints 5-1 at Feinbloom Field on Friday night.
In the third inning of a pitching duel between Barry’s Koubek (3-0) and John Groyl (3-1), Chris Leon led off with a walk off Groyl and came in on a ground out by Ashley.
The Bucs (19-9) broke the game open in the fifth with four straight hits to start the inning. Leon doubled to left field and Brett Rossi followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Rossi stole second and Nick Shaw knocked in Leon with a base hit. After Shaw stole second, Ashley delivered a base hit to left to score both runners.
In the seventh inning, Kenny Ray and Joey Rivera led off with singles and Billy Johnson delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the only run of the game for the Saints (17-13).
The Bucs got the run back in the eighth. Andrew Frezza reach on an error by shortstop Cale Owen and, after a double by John Servidio, scored on a sacrifice fly by Joel Keefe.
Koubek pitched into the eighth inning. After getting two outs, a walk, error and single loaded the bases and he was force to leave after developing tightness in his arm. Brian Milanes got the final four outs for his fourth save. Koubek worked 7.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.
Groyl took the loss for the Saints. He worked five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out one.
The teams will play a doubleheader at Feinbloom Field on Saturday, Mar. 22 to complete the three-game set.
