MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University volleyball team (3-2, 0-1 SSC) dropped a heart breaking five-set match to Rollins College (10-3, 1-0 SSC) on Friday night in the Health and Sports Center.
The Bucs came out slow in the first game, allowing Rollins to take an 18-11 lead. The Bucs fought back to 24-18, but could not capitalize and Rollins took the first game 25-18.
In the second game, the Bucs slowly worked their way to a 13-20 lead off the power hitting of Camilla Pagnan and Meisje-Sable Burton. Rollins fought to stay in it and brought the score to 21-24, but an attack error by Natalie Branche was enough to give the Bucs the win in set two.
The Bucs and Tars split sets three and four with Rollins taking set three 26-24, and the Bucs taking set four 25-27.
The fifth set was action-packed as Rollins and Barry went back-and-forth through the first four points. Eventually, Rollins jumped out to a 10-6 lead off the hitting Nikki Hartman and two Buccaneer mistakes. As the game looked lost though, the Bucs stormed back to tie it at 12-12 off of four kills by Camilla Pagnan. After trading four points to put the game at 16-16, two Tars kills ended the match for Barry.
Nikki Hartman lead Rollins with 19 kills, while setter Lacey Malarkey had 44 assists for the Tars. For Barry, Pagnan had 18 kills and two assisted blocks. Bucs setter Libby Waters had 41 assists.
The Buccaneers return to action on Saturday afternoon in the Health and Sports Center against Florida Tech at 4:00 pm.
