Volleyball Outlasts Tritons For First SSC Win

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers played tough when it counted and came away with a 3-2 (20-25,25-8,25-23,23-25,15-11) win over the Eckerd Tritons in Sunshine State Conference volleyball action Friday night in the McArthur Center.

The Bucs (4-3, 1-2 SSC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set and held on for a 15-11 win. Camilla Pagnan put down the ultimate kill to seal away the match.

After dropping the first set 25-20, the Bucs responded with perhaps their best set of the season, dominating the Tritons (10-5, 1-1 SSC) 25-8. The Buccaneers dominated at the net with 11 kills, a .400 attack percentage and five total blocks in the set. The Tritons managed only three kills and made six errors.

After taking the third set 25-23 behind five kills from Pagnan, the Bucs were poised to close out the match in set four. With the Bucs up 21-19, the Tritons scored six of the next eight points to take the set 25-23 and force the deciding frame.

Pagnan led the Bucs with 19 kills, while Stefanie Sveiven and Julia Ridley each had nine. Barry totaled 11 total blocks, led by Meisje-Sable Burton who had a hand in six. Libby Walter and Julie Priester split the setting chores and recorded 26 and 19 assists respectively.

Lydee Benoit led the Tritons with 16 kills, while Keisha Carter had 12.

The Bucs will take on the defending conference champs Tampa on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4:00 pm.
