The Buccaneers will face Nova again on April 18 at the SIRA Championships
MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—The Barry University rowing team lost in a close match to Nova Southeastern in the First Annual Barry/Nova Duel on Saturday morning.

In the varsity 8 event, the Buccaneers (cox- Priscilla Donahue, Stroke- Robin Cascioli, 7- Elise Carlson, 6 Renee Forcier, 5- Vanessa Viadero, 4- Summerlin Knipe, 3- Katie Rogers, 2- Rhiannon Doka, Bow- Kelsey Garcia) trailed Nova from the start, but were unable to overtake them, finishing in a time of 7:01.5. The Sharks finished just seconds ahead of the Bucs in 6:55.7.

“The racing conditions were great,” said head coach Dave Sanderson. “We fought hard and tried to attack, but just weren’t successful.”

In the varsity 4+/Novice combo, the Nova varsity 4 took the race in a time of 8:04.0. The Nova novice 4 finished second in 8:07.0, while the Bucs novice 4 finished in 8:39.6.

"The novice team gained more racing expereince and improved on previous times," said Sanderson.

The duels were the first time the Bucs went head-to-head with Nova, but won’t be the last time they will see the Sharks in competition. The teams will square off again in the SIRA Championships on April 18-19 and at the SSC Championships on April 24-25.

“We look forward to competing with them the rest of the season,” said Sanderson. “It’s a good rivalry and good competition between the schools.”

The Bucs return to action next weekend in Camden, N.J. at the Knecht Cup.
