BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry University men’s tennis team won in the first round of the 2009 SSC Tennis Championship, beating Saint Leo 5-0 on Thursday morning.
The doubles teams started the day out correctly, winning all three matches. In the number one spot, the #4 ranked team of Max Wimmer and Emanuel Fraitzl took down Ives Jacobs and Richard MacLachlin 8-3. In doubles two, the #12 ranked team of Andrew Sharnov and Ales Svigelj beat Andrew Sheets and Micahel Callaway 8-0. Finally in thenumber three spot, Roman Werschel and Sergio Velez beat Diego Timoteo and Jose Morales 8-3.
In singles action, four matches went unfinished. Fraitzl was up 6-0, 4-0 on Jacobs when the match ended. Sharnov was up 7-5, 1-0 on MacLachlin prior to their match going unfinished. Werschel was up a match on Morales before the end of their match, and D’Armas was up 6-1, 3-0 on Callaway.
The Bucs earned two points in singles competition to propel; them to victory. In the number three spot, Wimmer blanked Timoteo 6-0, 6-0. In the number five spot, Veles beat Anthony Carter 6-0, 6-0 for the win.
With the win, the Bucs advance to the SSC Semifinal against either Florida Southern or Eckerd tomorrow at 3:00
pm at Lynn University.
