LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry University women’s basketball team avenged an early-season loss to Florida Southern on Saturday evening, beating the Mocs 68-47 on the road. The win is the Bucs' first in Lakeland since 1999.

The Bucs (14-5, 6-3 SSC) came out strong in the first half, hitting their first eight field  goals which included 12 Christina Thompson  points, six from three-point land.

Barry built a strong lead of 10 points, 18-8, with 12:13 remaining in the first half, and would enter halftime on top 38-25.

The Bucs continued to dominate in the second half, stretching their lead to 18 off a Shanna Suttington three-pointer with 12:12 remaining. The Bucs largest lead of 24 came five minutes later when Suttington drove to the lane and converted a layup.

The Mocs (16-4, 6-3 SSC) tried to fight back as Megan Dzikas went 3-6 from beyond the arc, but were unable to contain the Bucs’ explosive offense. Meanwhile the Bucs' defense throttled the Mocs' high-powered offense, holding conference second-leading scorer Chelsea Johnson to just eight points.

For the Buccaneers, Mariesa Greene had 22 points. Thompson had 16, and Suttington chipped in 10.

The Bucs return to action on Wednesday, February 3 at 5:30 p.m. against Eckerd in the Health & Sports Center.
