MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The fourth-ranked Barry Buccaneers dominated the fifth-ranked Columbus State Cougars 8-1 at the Blue/Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala., in women’s tennis action at Lagoon Park on Friday.
The Bucs (16-2) grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles. The Cougars (14-3) got on the board first as Sofia Persson and Gabriela Vasilescu knocked off Caroline Wendling and Berit Peterson 8-3 at number two. Angie Werschel and Julie Stas evened the match by beating Tracy Castillo and Lucy Bird 8-4 at number three.
At the top flight, sixth-ranked Barbi Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina salvaged a 9-8 (3) win at number one over the 11th-ranked duo of Loriane Favoretto and Hanae Toumi.
The Bucs had to work overtime in singles as five of the six matches went to third sets. At number three, #40 Kasehelkina got her match done in two, beating Sofia Persson 6-4, 6-1.
Fifth-ranked Pocza split sets at number one with #22 Favoretto losing 3-6 in the first set, but bouncing back to take the next two 6-0, 6-4.
Caroline Wendling beat Vasilescu at number four 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to clinch the match.
With the match decided, the final three matches all played super-tiebreakers in place of third sets. Peterson defeated Andrea Redrado 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 at number five, while 12th-ranked Werschel set down #24 Castillo 6-3, 1-6, 10-3 at number two. Stas closed out the match at number six, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 against Bird.
The Bucs close out the Blue/Gray Classic on Saturday, taking on the host Auburn-Montgomery Senators, ranked number one in the NAIA, at 9:00 am. The Senators claimed a 7-2 win over the Bucs in Melbourne, Fla., on Mar. 18.
