MIAMI, Fla.—Propelled by a first-round 277 and a final-round 284, the top-ranked Barry University men’s golf team earned the top spot at the 2010 Buccaneer Invitational presented by Carrabba's Italian Grill. This is the second time in as many years that the Bucs have won the tournament they host.
The Bucs won with a two-over 854 (277-293-284). Their opening round score was the lowest of the tournament, giving them a ten-stroke lead heading into the second round of play. Barry was led by Daniel Stapff, the overall tournament winner, who fired a four-under 209 (67-74-68). Stapff’s first round 67 was the second lowest of the tournament.
Eighth-ranked Lynn University came from three strokes back after the second round and fired a 290 in the final round to earn second place overall with an 868 (287-291-290). Brevard Community College, who was in second place after the first two rounds, finished third overall with an 872 (290-285-297). Tampa (289-288-301) and #9 Central Missouri (284-299-295) each finished with an 878 to tie for fourth place.
Jeff Rein of St. Mary’s took second overall, one stroke off Stapff’s pace, with a 210 (69-73-68). Brevard’s Spenser Baldwin finished in third with a 211 (71-66-74). His second round 66 was the lowest for the tournament and tied the all-time tournament low set by Hernan Borja in 2005. Valdosta’s Chelsey Gunn and Lynn’s Steven Brame rounded out the top five finishers. Gunn posted a 212 (69-75-68) while Brame fired an even 213 (70-71-72).
For the remaining Buccaneers, Chris Carlin (71-73-71) and Carlos Velez (71-72-72) tied for eighth overall with a 215. Victor Billskoog shot a 216 (68-75-73) to tie for 12th while Roberto Cacho posted a 220 (71-74-75), tying him for 26th.
The Buccaneers return to action on Monday, April 19 in the SSC Championship hosted by Nova Southeastern University.
DAY ONE RESULTS

The Bucs combined for a 570 (277-293) for the lead, five strokes ahead of Brevard Community College’s 575 (290-285). University of Tampa is in third with a 577 (289-288). Eighth-ranked Lynn is a stroke off of Tampa with a 578 (287-291) while sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern and Johnson and Wales are tied at fifth with a 582.
Rounding out the remaining teams in the tournament, ninth-ranked Central Missouri is in seventh, St. Mary’s is in eighth, St. Leo is in ninth, and West Florida is in tenth. Valdosta State, ranked 22nd, and Flagler, ranked 17th, are tied for eleventh. Florida Tech is in 13th and Northwood is in 14th.
Brevard’s Spenser Baldwin sits at the top of the leader board having fired a 137 (71-66). Baldwin’s second round 66 was the low for the day and ties Hernan Borja’s record for the lowest round fired at the Buccaneer Invitational; Borja did it for the Buccaneers in 2005.
Tampa’s Nicolas Jutigny is in second, a stroke off of Baldwin, with a 138 (69-69). St. Mary’s Matt Vela (72-69), Lynn’s Steven Brame (70-71), and Barry’s Daniel Stapff (67-74) are tied for third, each with a 141. Stapff was alone in first place after the first round, firing a four-under 67.
