Men's Tennis in Conference Finals

LAKELAND, Fla.—After sweeping doubles and taking a 3-0 lead over the Florida Southern Mocs, the #5 Barry men’s tennis team coasted to a 5-0 victory on Friday in the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament.

Finishing first on the day was the Barry (18-4) senior/freshmen number three doubles team of Andrew Sharnov and Marco Mokrzycki. Sharnov/Mokrzycki took an 8-3 win over Florida Southern’s Christian Lange and C.J. Johnson.

Finishing shortly after Sharnov and Mokrzycki were the juniors, Sergio Velez and Emanuel Fraitzl. Velez/Fraitzl beat Ben Taylor and Brian deMontfort 8-4 at number two doubles.

At the top of the doubles lineup, Ales Svigelj and Max Wimmer took down the #12 doubles team of Michael Knoedler and Roman Schirmaier 8-5.

In the first two rounds of the SSC Tournament, the Buccaneers have swept their doubles matches by a combined score of 48-17.

The two singles wins came from #30 Fraitzl at number three and Wimmer at number four. Fraitzl made quick work of the Mocs’ Lange with a 6-1, 6-3 win. The last match of the day was Wimmer’s, as the sophomore racked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nicolas Bigler.

Barry advanced to the SSC Tournament finals with the win. The finals are set up to be one of the biggest challenges of the year for the Buccaneers. After #3 Lynn also coasted to a 5-0 over Rollins today, the Fighting Knights await the Buccaneers in the finals.

The previous matchup between the two teams resulted in a 7-2 Lynn victory. However, the once injury laden lineup for Barry is now healthy and poised for revenge against the Knights.

The tournament championship match is set for 9:00 a.m. Saturday, April 17.
