MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry men’s soccer team took a 3-0 win with the help of freshman Joong Kim’s two second half goals over the FIU Panthers on Saturday.

2009 SSC Freshman of the Year Johnny Rodrigues posted five saves in the shutout win, showing exactly why he earned the honor last season. Two of Rodrigues’ saves came on one-on-one opportunities for the Panthers. At the 10:53 mark, FIU’s Diego Tamburus found himself behind the Buccaneer defense with only Rodrigues to beat. The keeper stuffed Tamburus and earned his first save of the affair. In the second half FIU’s Mario Uribne went one-v-one against Rodrigues and came up empty after another sensation save.

Junior Alvaro Yusty found the back of the net in the 23rd minute to give Barry a 1-0 lead. Sascha Koettig started the attack and found Mark Anderson at the top of the box. Anderson then fed Yusty whose shot glanced off the keeper’s fingers and through the lower 90.

The half ended with a 1-0 Buccaneer advantage.

Kim entered the game as a substitute in the first half and gave Barry the next two goals. Just over a minute after the second half started, sophomore defender Glen Thomas’ shot was saved by FIU’s net minder Shane Lopez. Kim was there to finish off the rebound from the top of the six to give the Bucs a 2-0 tilt.

With 19:00 minutes to play, Kim again hustled himself into position for his second goal of the game. Senior forward Godfrey François’ shot caromed off the Panther keeper and Kim’s beautiful diving header placed the ball, again, in the back of the net.

The next match for Barry marks the start of the regular season. Barry hosts Lander on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
