MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers pulled out a 61-58 women’s basketball exhibition win over the Miami-Dade Sharks in the Health & Sports Center on Friday night.

The Sharks led 58-57 with 2:30 left in the game after a baseline jumper by Smiljana Cuk. But back-to-back baskets by freshman Mazel Huyler lifted the Bucs to victory.

The Sharks jumped out to a big early lead. After the first 11 minutes, they led 20-10 on Ashley Wilkes’ jumper in the paint. But the Bucs stormed back over the last nine minutes and took a 29-28 lead into halftime on a jumper by Glaucia Lehn with 0:30 seconds left.

After trading baskets to start the half, the Bucs rolled off 14 straight points over a five minute span that Anika Rivera capped with a three-point play at the 10:59 mark to give the Bucs a 49-38 lead.

Shanna Suttington led the Bucs with 15 points, while junior transfer Danielle DeBerry added 11. Huyler came off the bench to score nine points and grab a team-high 11 rebounds, seven of them offensive, in only 12 minutes.

“One of our concerns coming in was rebounding,” Barry head coach Bill Sullivan said. “We were amazed to see that Mazel led the team in only 12 minutes. She did a great job on the glass, especially on the offensive end.”

The Bucs host the FIU Panthers next Saturday, Nov. 6 at 11:30 am and open the regular season at West Alabama on Nov. 14.
