MIAMI, Fla.—The Barry University men’s basketball team dropped their season opener 68-65 to the Florida Memorial Lions on Sunday afternoon.
The Bucs (0-1) outshot the Lions 48.8% to 46.2% from the floor and 72.7% to 66.7 percent from the line, yet were unable to hold off a late charge by Florida Memorial.
The teams were close throughout much of the game. The Bucs held a slim 48-43 lead with 13:46 remaining in the game. The Lions, however, went on a 9-1 run over the next three minutes and took a 52-49 lead with 10:00 remaining in the game.
The Bucs got within two points multiple times and tied it up at 61 apiece with 1:21 remaining. The Lions hit a three-pointer and four free throws down the stretch to hand the Bucs their first loss of the season.
Zack Trapp led the way for the Bucs with 21 points off of seven for 10 from the floor and 1-1 from the charity stripe. Marvin Davis and Willie Whitfield combined for 27 points.
The bucs return to action tomorrow when they travel back South to face FIU at 7:30 pm.
