Volleyball Falls In Five Sets To Lynn

TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team led two sets to none, but were unable to hold Lynn University’s late charge as the Knights beat the Bucs 3-2 (24-26, 29-31, 27-25, 25-19, 17-15) in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Region Volleyball Tournament on Thursday evening.
 
The Bucs and Knights were evenly matched as four of the five sets went to overtime. For the match, there were 43 ties, and 16 lead changes.
 
In the first set neither team took more than a two point lead. The teams were tied at 22 apiece late in the set and traded points back and forth through 24-24. Lynn committed an attack error to give the Bucs the one point lead and Julia Teixeira killed the ball for the final Buccaneer point and the 26-24 win.
 
Set two played out in a similar fashion as both teams were close throughout. Lynn held set point at 24-22, but an attack error and a Teixeria kill tied it at 24 apiece. The teams went back and forth through 29-29 at which point Ady Alcantara blasted a shot down the line to give the Bucs the 30-29 lead. Lanie Muys earned the final point of the game to give the Bucs a 31-29 win in set two.
 
In set three, the teams were close as Lynn held an 11-10 lead in the early going. Lynn racked off seven of the next nine points to take an 18-13 lead. Yet Barry fought back and took nine straight to take a 21-19 lead. Milena Bukinac served four aces in the run and Alcantara added a kill.
 
Lynn took the next four and a 23-21 lead. The Bucs caught the Knights at 25-25, but Lynn took the final two to win set three 27-25.
 
Set four was all Lynn as the Knights took a three point lead at 15-12, and hung on to win 25-19.
 
In the fifth and decisive set, Lynn jumped out to and 7-4 lead and extended it to 11-7. Barry remained resilient, taking eight of the next 11 points to take a 15-14 lead. Facing match point, the Knights took two straight to turn the tables on the Bucs with a 16-15 lead. Barry would tie it at 16-16 and 17-17, two Haley Pratt kills gave Lynn the 19-17 win in set five and a 3-2 win.
 
Teixeira led all hitters with 36 kills and 15 digs for the double-double. Alcantara had a double-double as well with 11 digs and 12 kills. Muys chipped in on offense with 11 kills and defense with four total blocks.
