MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell 64-59 to the Eckerd Tritons in Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday night.
The Bucs (9-11, 2-8 SSC) trailed by three, 59-56, after a pair of free throws by Eckerd’s Taylor Young. Young then stole the in-bounds pass and went back to the line to give the Tritons (12-8, 5-5 SSC) a five-point lead and Eckerd held on for the win.
The Bucs came out hot, hitting back-to-back three-pointers by Yvonne Houston and Danielle DeBerry and led 6-0 after the first minute. But the Tritons rolled off the next 17 points to go up 17-6 on a layup by Lotte Tobiason at the 11:28 mark and carried a 32-25 lead into the intermission.
The Bucs went to a press in the second half and forced the Tritons into 15 second-half turnover after they only committed three in the first half. But shooting woes doomed Barry as they hit just six of 20, 30 percent, in the second half.
Houston led Barry with 13 points, while Adrienne Hicks and DeBerry each had 12 and Nadia Tijani added 11. Young led Eckerd with a game-high 16 points. Tijana Brdar had 14 points before fouling out with 5:37 to play. Ashley Lutz had 12 and Krystal Charles added 10.
The Bucs travel to Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday to take on the league-leading Florida Southern Lady Mocs in Jenkins Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
