Women's Basketball Spoils Lions Senior Day

SAINT LEO, Fla.—After 14 lead changes and four ties, the Barry women’s basketball team pulled away from the Saint Leo Lions to end the regular season with a 62-49 win on Saturday.

Nadia Tijani led all scorers and rebounders with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Tijani averages just over 25:00 minutes a game this season but posted 30:00 minutes and shot 4-8 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line against Saint Leo.

Barry tallied a 39 percent mark from the field in the first half and went 4-9 from behind the arc, while Saint Leo collected 44 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. Both teams totaled 32 points in the first half and headed into the locker room tied at the intermission.

The Bucs turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, allowing Saint Leo to shoot just over 20 percent from the field and 0-6 from behind the arc. The Barry defense forced the Lions into committing 18 turnovers. During the last 10:00 minutes of the second half, Saint Leo only posted one field goal at the 9:45 mark.

With 14:15 on the clock in the second half Saint Leo took a five point lead at 42-37. After a Tijani layup with 08:13 remaining, the Bucs took a 50-49 advantage and would never relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. Barry went on to score 12 more points and Saint Leo never scored again for the entirety of the game.

With Lynn’s 66-54 win over Rollins on Saturday, the Bucs will head to play top seeded Florida Southern next Wednesday in Lakeland, Fla. in the opening round of the SSC Tournament.
