Men's Basketball Downed by Lions as Whitfield Surpasses Milestone

SAINT LEO, Fla.—As Willie Whitfield claimed the Barry record for career rebounds, the Barry men’s basketball team dropped the last game of the regular season 85-70 to the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday

Whitfield now has 799 rebounds for his career and passed Bobby Latham who sits at 791.

Willie Whitfield led Barry with 15 points and 11 rebounds followed by Levon Williams with 14 points and three rebounds. Zack Trapp added 10 points and Evan White had a game-high seven assists.

Saint Leo started the game on a 14-1 run and never looke d back. The Bucs cut the lead down to 10 with 12:45 in play in the first half but Saint Leo ended the half much the same way they started as the half ended with Saint Leo up 16 at 43-27. Barry ended the first half shooting 48 percent from the field and 27 percent from behind the arc.

Saint Leo stretched their lead to the largest of the game in the second period at the 18:06 mark after Quentin Cullop connected on a three to make it a 49-27 game. Barry cut the lead down to 11 at 02:07 left in the game at 76-65 but that was the closest the Bucs would be to the Lions the rest of the game.

The Bucs tallied 43 percent shooting from the field but only shot 50 percent from the free throw line on the game.

The first round match of the SSC tournament is set for Barry as they will travel to Winter Park, Fla. to play the top seeded Rollins Tars in the first round on Wednesday, March 2.
