MELBOURNE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the Sunshine State Conference softball season with a sweep of Florida Tech, taking the doubleheader on Wednesday at Nancy Bottge Field 11-1 and 6-2.

In the first game, Alyssa Goldsmith smacked her first homer of the season to give Barry (13-4, 3-0 SSC) at 1-0 lead in the first against Panther starter Brianna Barth (5-6). The Bucs tacked on five runs in the second inning. With two outs, Natalia Ojeda, Sarah Broseker and Grace Collins all delivered RBI singles and two runs came in on a dropped fly ball off of Goldsmith’s bat.

In the seventh, Barry added five more runs. Amber Durkin connected for a two-run homer, the first of her career. Collins and Goldsmith both delivered doubles to plate three more runs.

Paula Mackin (5-1) earned the win. She came one out away from a shutout, allowing just the one run on five hits and a walk and struck out 10. Barth, who took the loss in the first game of the series as well, allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits and struck out four.

In game two, the Bucs and Panthers (10-11, 0-3 SSC) traded runs in the first and third innings. In the fifth inning tied 2-2, Broeseker and Collins led off with singles and Goldsmith hammered an RBI double to right. Brianna Smith (5-3) squeezed in Collins for a 4-2 lead.

In the sixth, Durkin led off with a double and scored on a single by Collins. Tabor closed the scoring with a homer, her first, in the seventh.

Smith picked up her fourth win of the week, going the distance and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. She struck out six. Lauren Cole (1-1) took the loss for the Panthers.
