Men's Tennis Speared by Tritons

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The second-ranked Barry Buccaneers continued to struggle, dropping a 5-4 decision to the 24th-ranked UC San Diego Tritons on Friday.

The Bucs (6-4) dropped two of three doubles as the pairs lineup remained the Achilles heel for the team. Tritons Erik Elliott and Austin West, ranked ninth in the latest ITA rankings, defeated Max Wimmer and Ollie Lemaitre 8-4 at the top flight, while at number three Max Jiganti and Armaun Emami knocked off Barry’s Quentin Vachez and Simon Raagaard 8-5.

Emanuel Fraitzl and Sergio Velez staved off the sweep with an 8-4 win over Jason Wall and Chapman Chan at number two.

In singles, Barry’s Velez quickly evened the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jiganti at number six.

But UCSD’s Vincent Nguyen knocked off Vachez 6-4, 6-3 at number four. The big blow came at number one where top-rated Fraitzl was upset by the Tritons’ Elliott, ranked 31st 6-4, 6-4. West closed out the match for the Tritons with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over Lemaitre at number five.

Barry’s #26 Wimmer and #11 Marco Mokrzycki made the match 5-4 by taking three-set wins at number two and three singles respectively. Wimmer defeated Chan 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, while Mokrzycki got past Sam Ling 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-1.

The Bucs will face off against NAIA Azuza Pacific on Saturday, Mar. 12 at 11:00 am Pacific time.
