Baseball Bitten By Long Ball In Loss To Mocs
LAKELAND, Fla.—The 28th-ranked Barry Buccaneers were bitten by the long ball as they dropped the opener of a Sunshine State Conference baseball series to the Florida Southern Moccasins 5-3 in 10 innings at Henley Field on Friday night. The 14th-ranked Mocs (21-5, 7-0 SSC) hit three homers to power the win.

After falling behind 2-0 after the first three innings, the Bucs (22-9, 9-1 SSC) clawed back to score single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth to take a 3-2 lead. Dean Green and James Young had sacrifice flies in the sixth and seventh respectively, while Matt Petty’s RBI single in the eight gave the Bucs their only lead.

The Mocs tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a lead-off homer by Mike Snyder, his second of the ball game.

In the 10th, Tyler Benzel blasted a walk-off two-run homer to left off reliever T.J. Mullins (2-1). Mullins worked two innings in relief of starter Manny Rodriguez. Mullins allowed the two runs (one earned) on one hit and struck out one. Rodriguez struck out 11 in 7.1 innings.

Jake Guengerich (3-0) worked around a single by Harold Holness and walk to Green in the 10th to earn the win for FSC. Starter Gus Schlosser went eight innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks and struck out nine.

The series concludes on Saturday, Apr. 2 with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
