TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry University softball team salvaged a split with the Tampa Spartans on Sunday afternoon at Leslie Kantor Field. The Bucs dropped the first game 3-0, but bounced back to win 5-2 in 12 innings the second game.
The Bucs (29-9, 15-3 SSC) took the win in the twelfth inning of the finale as Sarah Broeseker singled to center field. Graces Collins, the next batter, singled up the middle advancing Broseker to second. Alyssa Goldsmith reached on a Tampa error, scoring Broseker and Collins. Jessica Tabor chipped in with a single to score Goldsmith as the Bucs took the 5-2 lead.
Brianna Smith pitched the entire 12 innings for the Bucs and moves to 15-6 on the year. She allowed five hits and two wlaks and stuck out seven. Kari Walsh (12-3) took the loss for Tampa, after winning game one. She worked eight innings in relief of Deana Henriott, allowing three runs on 11 hits and a walk and struck out four.
The Bucs struck in the first inning as Broeseker hit a leadoff triple and came home off a Collins single. Goldsmith advanced Collins with a sacrifice bunt, and Collins later scored off a double by Smith.
The Spartans, who were scoreless through the first six innings, tied it up 2-2 in the sixth inning as Susan Jallo reached on a single and scored as the result of a Buccaneer throwing error. Later in the inning Becky Vyzas scored off an Elizabeth Milhan single to tie it up.
In the first game, the Spartans struck in the third inning scoring three runs off of three hits including a Becky Vyzas homer. The Bucs got close in the first inning with runners on second and third, but were unable to capitalize.
Paula Mackin took the loss in the first game, moving to 9-3 on the season.
With the win, Barry moves to 29-9 overall and 15-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. Tampa moves up to 32-7 and 13-5 in conference play. The Bucs return to action next weekend against league-leading Rollins.
