PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped to the elimination round with a 9-2 loss to the top-seeded West Florida Argonauts at the 2011 NCAA South Region Baseball Tournament at UWF’s Jim Spooner Field on Friday night.

The Argonauts (46-8) plated runs in five of the nine frames, including a three-run eighth inning that sealed the win.

The lone bright spot for the Bucs (36-16) was first baseman Dean Green who went three-for –four for the second straight night, coming just a triple shy of the cycle. He singled, doubled and hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to account for all the Buccaneer offense.

Daniel Vargas-Vila (13-1) set a UWF record for wins in a season, going the distance and limiting the Bucs to six hits and three walks, while striking out six. Brett Hammaker (8-3) went five innings, but gave up six runs on eight hits to take the loss.

The Bucs drop to face the Tampa Spartans in an elimination game at 4:30 pm Central time on Saturday. Tampa advanced by beating Gulf South Conference champs Southern Arkansas 4-3 in 13 innings in the first game on Friday.
