WINTERPARK, Fla.—The fifth-ranked Barry University men’s soccer team fell to the second-ranked Tars of Rollins College by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night at Sandspur Field in a game that went deep into the night due to weather stoppages.
The initial start of the game was delayed by 30 minutes and then 20 minutes into the first half, play was stopped because of lightning. After a second delay that lasted 72 minutes play resumed and both teams seemed to elevate their level of play because of the magnitude of the game.
The Buccaneers struck first when junior Glen Thomas connected for his first goal on the season to give the Bucs the 1-0 lead. However the lead was not long lived as the Tars were able to even the score at 1-1 when Marteen Meuller pushed one across after the rebound on a set play.
The Buccaneers came out aggressive in the second half and set the pace offensively for much of the period. Throughout, the Bucs had the advantage in shots 17 to 10 and in corners with six to Rollin’s 1. However, the ball did not bounce the Bucs way tonight as they were unable to capitalize on any of their attacks and in the 88th minute it was Rafa Faria who was able to head a ball in past Johnny Rodrigues that would seal the Barry’s chances.
The loss was the first this season for the Bucs who will now prepare for Eckerd on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday with live-stat and audio broadcast available through the Barry University athletic website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
