Men's Golf Takes Win At NSU Shark Invitational

­­WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The fourth-ranked Barry University men’s golf team posted an 863 (288-286-289) to take first place of 14 teams at the NSU Shark Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The Bucs beat five other ranked teams to earn the top spot.

Host and 14th-ranked Nova Southeastern finished in second place, 14 strokes behind the Bucs with an 877 (290-299-288). Third-ranked Lynn finished a stroke behind the Sharks with an 878 (293-291-294) to take third place. Johnson & Wales fired an 886 (297-293-296) to finish in fourth while the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds shot an 888 (297-300-291) to round out the top five.

The Bucs were led by Simon Forsslund who took top spot in the tournament with a 211 (70-70-71). Forsslund, who was in second place after the first two rounds, finished a stroke better than Johnson & Wales’ Brandon Meltzer who led after the first day. The NSU Shark Invitational was Forsslund’s first as a Buccaneer and his first collegiate victory.

Scott Smyers was the next highest finisher for Barry. Smyers finished tied for seventh with a 217 (72-69-76). Daniel Stapff was just a stroke behind Smyers’ pace with a 218 (72-75-71) and finished tied for ninth.

Marcus Segerstrom posted a 220 (74-72-74) to finish in 15th place while Marcelo Huarte rounded out the Buccaneer finishers with a 222 (74-75-73) to finish tied for 18th place.

DAY ONE RESULTS

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Barry University men’s golf team posted a 574 (288-286) to lead after the first two rounds at NSU Shark Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern University.

SSC-rival Lynn University sits 10 strokes off the Bucs’ pace with a 584 (293-291). Host Nova Southeastern is in third with a 589 (290-299). Johnson & Wales in fourth, just a stroke shy of the Sharks with a 590 (297-293), and Florida Southern sits in fifth with a 596 (298-298).

Simon Forsslun leads the way for Barry after two rounds. Forsslund fired a 140 (70-70) and is in second place. Scott Smyers is a stroke off Forsslund’s pace with a 141 (72-69). Smyers is tied for third.

Marcus Segerstrom posted a 146 (74-72) to tie for ninth after the first two rounds. Daniel Stapff and Marcelo Huarte rounded out the Buccaneer five. Stapff is tied for 14th with a 147 (72-75) and Huarte is tied for 24th with a 149 (74-75).

The teams return to action tomorrow for the third and final round.
