MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The 15th-ranked Barry softball team broke out the bat to score 12 runs and crank out 16 hits in a doubleheader sweep, 5-2 and 7-1, over the Mercyhurst Lakers at Buccaneer Field on Tuesday night.

The Bucs (14-3) posted single runs in five of their six frames in game one. Julie Brito’s RBI single in the third inning after Brianna Smith had led off the inning with a triple was the game-winner. Brito, who went 2-for-3, also knocked in Smith in the first inning. Amber Durkin scored on an error in the second.

In the fourth, Smith plated Grace Collins who reached on a fielder’s choice and promptly stole second and third. Natalia Ojeda capped the scoring in the sixth, coming around on another error.

Smith (6-2) went the distance to earn the win. She allowed seven hits and walked one while striking out five. Annie Truelove (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Lakers (6-6). She allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks and struck out two.

In the second game, the Lakers grabbed an early lead on Jen Bowers’ RBI single in the first. But the Bucs sent eight batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored five runs. Smith drew a lead-off walk and was sacrificed to second. After a strikeout, pinch-hitter Paula Mackin laced a double into right field to tie the game at 1-1. Pinch runner Cassy Zamora came home on a double by Kayla Monroy and Ojeda followed with an RBI single. After an RBI double by Sarah Broeseker scored Ojeda, another error allowed the fifth run to score.

In the sixth, the Bucs tacked on two more and nearly ended it early. Zamora drew a walk to start the frame. She stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Ojeda delivered the RBI single to get her home. After Broeseker and Collins singled to load the bases, Ojeda came in on a ground out by Alyssa Goldsmith. Smith’s hot smash up the middle was snagged by Laker second sacker Emily Redig to keep the game alive.

Alexis Yohe (5-1) was brilliant in the circle for the Bucs. She tossed a complete game and allowed just the one unearned run on three hits and three walks, while fanning a season-high 12 batters. Kristin Janoske (2-1) took the loss. She allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in 3.2 innings and struck out five.

The Bucs play host to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 5:00 pm in a doubleheader at Buccaneer Field.
