MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The 11th-ranked Barry Buccaneers put together another solid outing in a 1-0 win over the Saint Leo Lions in the opener of a Sunshine State Conference softball series at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.

Brianna Smith (10-3) overcame a shaky start, in which she allowed four base-runners in the first two innings, to win her 10th game of the season.  After hitting back-to-back batters with one out in the second, Smith set down 18 of the last 19 batters she faced, including the side in order in the last four innings. It was Smith second straight one-hit shutout in SSC play and ran her scoreless innings streak to 18.0 frames.

Sarah Broeseker connected for a solo homer, her second game-winning homer in three games, with two outs in the third inning off Lion starter Megan Still (6-7). She also had a one-out double in the sixth, but was stranded. Other than Broeseker, the Bucs (21-4, 4-0 SSC) only managed two other hits off Still, a pair of back-to-back singles by Jessica Tabor and Amber Durkin in the fifth inning.

Brittany Yates managed the only hit off of Smith, a bloop single that landed about six inches fair down the left-field line in back of third base with two outs in the first inning.

Smith did not walk a batter, though she hit three in the first two innings, and struck out four. Still walked one and struck out one in taking the loss for the Lions (14-12, 1-3 SSC).

The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.
