WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers kept on rolling with a 1-0 win over the 14th-ranked Rollins Tars at Sandspur Field in Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday.
The Bucs (8-3-0, 3-0-0 SSC) grabbed sole possession of first place in the conference on the strength of Lavinia Nkomo’s game-winner in the 59th minute and Becca Roger’s fifth shutout.
With the score knotted at 0-0, the Tars (8-3-0, 2-1-0 SSC) were whistled for a foul about 30 yards out. Tamara Vuckovich put the free kick on frame. Rollins keeper Mary Spring managed to deflect the shot, but could not corral it and Nkomo was there to knock in the rebound.
Rogers had eight saves to record the shutout and Bucs’ defense turned up the pressure after the goal, limiting the high-scoring Tars to just one shot on goal over the last 30 minutes. Rollins held a slight edge in shots, 12-13 and 8-7 on goal, but the Bucs dominated the last third of the game, out-shooting the Tars 5-2. Spring had six saves for the Tars.
The Bucs start SSC play 3-0 for the first time since 2004, the last time the Bucs won the regular season title.
The Bucs return to Buccaneer Field on Wednesday, Oct. 16 to face the Saint Leo Lions. The Lions are the only other undefeated team in the conference at 2-0 after defeating Nova Southeastern 2-0 on Saturday.
