Why Barry?

Hands-on Experience

Barry University's Athletic Training program emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning. Your degree preparation includes the use of case study models that emphasize ethical and moral decision-making for leaders in athletic training.

By the time you graduate, you will have worked with patients for years and established a bedside manner. We believe that this approach does a better job of preparing you for employment because you have the opportunity to master the manual techniques that a strictly theory-based program may not have time to cover.

Students have access to the University's athletic training, biomechanics, human performance, and performance behavior labs for coursework and research.

Recognized Faculty

At Barry University, our faculty's number one priority is teaching. Barry prides itself on having one of the finest athletic training faculty in the country, who are recognized as among the top educators in the field. The program's well-known faculty have experience ranging from assignment as a team for accreditation site visits to the development of a clinical instruction model which has been the template for most undergraduate programs developed since 2001.

Focus on Excellence

We treat the national standards for athletic training programs as a foundation to be built upon. We have implemented all of the standards utilized by NATA-accredited graduate programs, with one exception. Certification is desirable upon entry, but students who are in the process of becoming BOC certified are still allowed to enter the program.

Our 1,800 square foot Athletic Training Room, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, ensures that you will have the kind of extensive preparation you need to begin your clinical experiences. The Barry University community offers further opportunities, including experiences with our Sunshine State Conference athletic program, considered one of the top Division II programs in the nation.

Personalized Attention

Program Director Dr. Sue Shapiro, along with the graduate athletic training faculty, will assist you in determining the professional requirements that you need to meet for your specific career path in your plan of study. This process will help you in choosing your courses, as well as your major project internship or thesis topic to complete the research component of your degree program.

Small class sizes ensure that you will receive personalized attention and access to faculty, equipment, and the patient population.

Ideal Location

Our ideal South Florida location gives you access to a broad range of opportunities for experience within a diverse population and tropical climate.
