Academic Year’s Community Engagement Calendar Includes Variety of Programs and Events

Community Engagement Symposium and Awards Slated for March 25

More than 100 students from Barry University and St. Thomas University turned out for the demonstration in support of farm workers inNorth Miami Beach last November. A similar demonstration is planned for October 26.

A variety of programs and events are on this academic year’s community engagement calendar. They include days of service, public forums, a demonstration in support of farm workers, and an awards ceremony.

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) will host the annual Community Engagement Fair in the fall and both the seventh annual Community Engagement Symposium and Community Engagement Awards on the same day in the spring.

Four major days of service are on the calendar. They include the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, International Coastal Cleanup Day, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. A special day of service is being planned for Barry’s Founders Week in November.

The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of efforts, launched in 2002, to encourage volunteering on 9/11 as a tribute to victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the terrorist attacks on that day in 2001. Barry’s observance of the 9/11 Day of Service will take place on September 14.

DAY OF SERVICE: The first day of service on this year’s calendar honors victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

On September 21, Barry volunteers will take part in an International Coastal Cleanup project. They will remove debris and discarded items from the shoreline and nearby areas at Virginia Key Beach and other coastal areas in Miami-Dade County.

In addition to the major days of service, several Saturdays of Service are on the calendar. They include Sustainability Saturday, April 18.

The CCSI will host four forums in this year’s Deliberative Dialogue Series. The topics are South Florida’s racist past, temporary protected status for foreign nationals, comprehensive sex education in Florida schools, and the handling of waste. The 90-minute forums will be held on September 19, November 6, February 25, and April 16.

The Deliberative Dialogue Series serves as a method of civic learning and engagement in addressing hot-button social issues. The series brings together campus and community stakeholders to weigh perspectives on the issues and to work towards practical solutions.

As part of the Campus Democracy Project (CDP), there will be a Constitutional Day (September 17) celebration on campus. Additionally, the CDP Committee will host forums with state legislators on September 25 and October 8, beginning at 6 p.m.

Also on the calendar is a demonstration in support of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ Fair Food Program on October 26 as well as Alternative Spring Break (ASB), February 29–March 6. Students interested in ASB are invited to an open house on October 2 in the De Porres Center (Thompson Hall), starting at 4 p.m.

The Community Engagement Symposium and Community Engagement Awards are premier events. Both will be held on March 25.

The symposium will feature a nationally recognized community engagement scholar as the lead presenter. Students, faculty, and staff members will make presentations, and there will be a Student Poster Competition.

The Community Engagement Fair will be held on September 25, with the showcase segment scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the atrium of the Landon Student Union.
