Community Engagement Symposium to Focus on Partnerships

Barry University’s third annual Community Engagement Symposium will be held on March 30, 2016. The symposium’s focus will be on university-community partnerships.

Each year, the symposium provides an opportunity for presentations and discussions of community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives. The main features of the program are seminars/workshops by a nationally recognized community engagement expert; concurrent presentations by faculty, students, and community partners; and a poster session.

The 2016 event will highlight collaborative activities between campus and community partners that have contributed to the achievements of students in their academic work and civic involvement.

Two Service-Learning Fellowships Available for 2016–2017

Two service-learning fellowships will be available to faculty next academic year.

Through the fellowships, successful applicants participate in a yearlong faculty development program focused on service-learning pedagogy, practice, and associated scholarship. Each service-learning fellow gets a course release to serve as a workshop coordinator/instructor, faculty mentor, and engaged scholar.

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) invites faculty members to apply for the fellowships by the January 30 deadline. Further information is available from CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen at gbowen@barry.edu.

Mini-Grants Available for Community-Based Research

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) is offering mini-grants for community-based research (CBR). Full-time faculty who teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses may apply for a mini-grant of up to $500.

CBR proposals may be submitted at any time this semester to CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen at gbowen@barry.edu. For further information and an application form, contact Bowen via e-mail.

Students Participate in International Coastal Cleanup

A group of Barry students participated in the International Coastal Cleanup project at the historic Virginia Key Beach in Key Biscayne on September 19.

Javelle Campbell, Wills Compere, Justin Hoyte, Sydney Ingram, Marrissa Jones, Alberto Liriano, Donté Roberts, Jarvis Washington, and Mernyka Webster removed discarded items such as plastic bottles, shoes and clothes, toys, and fishing lines from both the beach and the dunes.

As part of their three-hour service assignment, the students also documented information on the sources of those items for VolunterCleanup.org, to be used in its education and policy-change efforts.

Ocean Conservancy sponsors International Coastal Cleanup, which draws attention to ocean trash as “a serious pollution problem that affects the health of people, wildlife and local economies.” The organization publishes data collected each year in the Ocean Trash Index.

Institutional Advancement Staff Member Promotes Women’s Health

Institutional Advancement staff member Victoria Lindsey Champion is supporting the door-to-door outreach campaigns of the Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI).

Lindsey Champion is a senior development officer for major gifts in the Division of Institutional Advancement and External Affairs. She has been a WBHI volunteer for more than six years. On September 19, she joined other WBHI Florida Affiliate volunteers and staff members involved in the current campaign, providing breast- and heart-health education packages and making appointments for mammograms and heart screenings.

WBHI’s mission is to save lives by connecting at-risk women with the prevention and early detection necessary to fight breast cancer and heart disease.

Barry’s Freshmen Experience Day Featured in NASPA Blog

Barry University’s Freshmen Experience Day was featured recently in a NASPA blog titled “Live A Barry Life!”

According to the blog, Freshmen Experience Day provides an introduction to Barry’s core commitments of collaborative service and social justice. The Division of Student Affairs and the Center for Community Service Initiates (CCSI) co-sponsor the day’s activities.

“Through this partnership, we offer our incoming first-year students a chance to learn about our inclusive philosophy, strong traditions, and the significant experiences that form the true meaning of ‘a Barry Life,” the blog said.

Dr. Scott F. Smith, vice president for student affairs; John Moriarty, director of career development; and LaKima Garnett, associate director of the Center for Student Involvement, wrote the blog.

Box Tops for Education Drive to Benefit Two Schools

The Minority Association of Pre-health Students (MAPS) and the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) thank Barry students, faculty, and staff for their ongoing support of the Box Tops for Education Drive.

“So far this year, we have surpassed last year's donation rate,” MAPS Advisor Dr. Stephanie Bingham has reported.

“A new recipient school has been added this year, and your Box Tops donations will now alternate between North Miami Elementary and Sheridan Hills Elementary each donation cycle,” Bingham said.

“It is very easy to participate in the Box Tops for Education Drive,” Bingham explained. “Simply identify the Box Tops logo on household products – including many grocery items – you already purchase. Cut the logo from the packaging and drop it in the Box Tops donation boxes on campus.”

Donation boxes are at several locations, including the CCSI office (Adrian 208) and the Landon Atrium information desk.

The full list of products with the Box Tops for Education label/logo is available at www.boxtops4education.com/downloads/participatingproducts_pdf

For further information, contact MAPS at BarryMAPS@gmail.com.

MAPS is a multicultural organization with members from undergraduate (biology, chemistry, and nursing) and graduate (BMS) programs at Barry University.
