Call for Applications for Service-Learning Designation The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) invites faculty members who teach community-engaged courses to apply for the service-learning designation. Service-learning is defined as “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with course work and critical reflection to enrich the learning experience, foster civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” Sections of courses, internships, practicum assignments, field education, capstones, community-based research, and similar community-focused or community-based assignments may be designated as service-learning. Mini-Grants Available for Community-Based Research The CCSI is offering mini-grants for community-based research (CBR). Faculty who teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses may apply for a mini-grant of up to $500. A CBR project may be conducted by an entire class, or by a group or team. Each team must include at least one student, faculty member (as co-investigator and/or mentor), and community partner. CBR proposals should be submitted by November 28 to CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen at gbowen@barry.edu. For further information, contact Bowen via e-mail. |
Community Service Trips Planned for October Three community sites have been selected for weekly service trips. They are UrbanPromise Miami, Sinai Plaza Nursing and The trip schedule is as follows: UrbanPromise Barry students will co-facilitate academic, athletic, and art enrichment activities for youth in Little Havana. Participants will visit with residents and provide support for recreational programs. Camillus House, Thursdays, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Students will serve lunch to homeless community members at the new campus. A special trip has been planned with the Miami-Dade Foster and Adoptive Parent Association for Saturday, October 19. Participants will attend a foster family meeting in October 25 is Make a Difference Day. Community service projects organized by career interest are being finalized for various locations.
